Postpartum Meals

As the Chinese saying goes ‘Food is people’s paramount concern’,we have accepted the fact that food forms the main component of life. Food is especially important in  postnatal ladies as they need more nutrients to support their lactation needs and to replenish what that has lost. It is believed that women lost a lot of ‘heat’ in the process of giving birth thus their body became cold in the postpartum period. Therefore, postpartum diets focus a lot on taking ‘warm food’ and avoiding ‘cold food’.

In traditional Chinese Medicine, warm and heaty food includes lamb, chicken, ginger, ginseng, sesame, red dates, Chinese rice wine etc. On the other hand, most vegetables and fruits are considered cold food. Traditionally, women are told not to take fresh vegetables and fruits, to take 1 chicken a day, to take food cooked with a lot of ginger and sesame oil in their diet and some even forbid postnatal mothers to drink water. This diet could be too heaty for some ladies causing some people to get fever. Diet lack of fibres and water may lead to problems like constipation as well. Thus many have slowly abandoned the old concept and started to find alternatives for a healthier, more scientific diet.

So, in Spink Confinement and Baby Care, we implement the modern medicine and dietetic concept in our confinement menu so that it will be more beneficial to our new mothers.

What are the principles of a modern confinement diet?
